Some
useful advice
Plant in well-drained soil or compost
This is true for almost all exotic plants.
The last thing you want is for them to be sitting in a bog or clay. Mix
pumice, gravel and some organic manure into heavy soils to lighten and
improve drainage.
Late Fall and Winter Care
In the Pacific Northwest, outdoor watering
can virtually stop after October. The shorter day length and cooler
temperature send the plants into semi or full-blown dormancy. They are
not active and therefore do not need much water or nutrient to keep them
alive. Too much water in winter can cause root rot and algae bloom
especially in the green house.
Protection
Protect non-hardy plants in the outdoors
with breathable material during the cold winter period.
Summer Care
As a rule of thumb here at
Msk Nursery, we
water plants only when they show sign of wilting to prevent
over-watering and root rot. Herbaceous plants like Pulmonaria
angustifolia, Kiringishoma palmata and Ligularia appear to
require the most watering. We do not fertilize our plants, they are all
grown organically which means we use well-rotted manure/shredded
herbaceous plants for mulch. The mulch helps keep the moisture in the
ground longer after each watering in late spring and summer.
